The unseen road
Inspired by a photograph taken at Karkloof
Left, a sparkling greeting; right, a solemn meditation.
Beyond, a feathery-based slatted fence separates road
from meadow, middle distant, misty, remote,
ethereal as boys’ voices echoing from the hill.
Foreground shadow is dispelled by laughing sunlight:
green hedge shapes tumble in an ecstasy of contrast,
now broad and regular, now busy leaf clusters,
and on the edge, a silver shimmer generous with praise.
Out of this comfortable intimacy the road abruptly disappears.
Around the corner stretches the future, unknown and unknowable,
unfathomable, demanding not understanding of the route
but surrender to infinite light and love.
